This section tells about some quick steps for getting the hosts switched without having any downtime in the web applications or simply to minimizing the downtime to zero. Switching to a new host is a complicated process. Follow these steps to ensure the installation is easy and smooth.
* The first step for a user is to join new host. Do not cancel the old hosting provider. Just terminate prematurely the site and cause downtime.
* At this point, they should have hosting accounts with two hosting providers (the old and the new one). Now the entire site is migrated from the old host to the new one. This can be done by connecting to the old host’s FTP and downloading all their files, and then by connecting to the new host’s FTP and uploading all their files (maintain the same file and folder structure). If he chooses to make HostGator his new host, then the service provider may have to transfer his entire site without any charges.
* After all the files from both hosting accounts are transferred, it is time to change the domain name’s DNS. Now the new host will provide him a domain name with the correct name servers (DNS). Simply contact the new host to find out what DNS settings he should use for his new domain name. DNS name servers usually looks like this (replace “yourhostname.com” with the host’s actual domain name): ns1.yourhostname.com and ns2.yourhostname.com. Once the correct DNS is received, visit the company from where they have purchased their domain name to make the change. If they have purchased the domain name from the host, they need to ask them to make the DNS changes. Simply justify the statements, similar to writing a request letter to the executive of an organization. If they have bought it from HostGator, then their online support are happy to help or even make the DNS changes for their users.
* Once the DNS changes have been made, just wait for 48 hours (two days) before the site will be loaded by the new host. During this 48 hour period, their DNS is propagating worldwide and the site will be randomly loaded from either the old host or the new host. Once the two days is complete, the site will only be loaded from the new host.
* After the 48 hours have passed, updated DNS will be fully functional. Now contact the old host and cancel all hosting account they are having. If the new host’s domain name is also bought from the old host, please do not cancel the old domain registration, just renew it.
